Dwight Muhammad Qawi (41-11-1, 25) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. on January 5, 1953. At the age of 25 years on April 19, 1978, he made his professional boxing debut against Leonard Langley, losing the fight via 6-round points decision.

On his 18th career fight at 28 years old, Qawi became a light-heavyweight world champion on December 19, 1981 after defeating Matthew Saad Muhammad via 10th-round TKO to win the WBC and The Ring titles.

He then went on to become world champion at the cruiserweight weight class as well, winning the WBA title against Piet Crous via 11th-round KO on July 27, 1985.
