Earnie Shavers (The Black Destroyer) was an American professional boxer. He was born in Garland, Alabama, U.S. on August 31, 1944. Shavers died on September 1, 2022 at the age of 78 years. His professional boxing career spanned more than 26 years — from 1969 to 1995.
Shavers made his professional boxing debut against Silas Howell at the age of 25 on November 6, 1969, defeating Howell via 1st round TKO.
He had his first world title fight at the age of 33 on September 29, 1977 after 60 professional fights, against Muhammad Ali for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring titles. He lost to Ali via 15 round unanimous decision.
Shavers had a total of 14 losses in his professional boxing career.
His last professional fight was a non-title bout against Brian Yates at 51 years of age, on November 24, 1995. Shavers lost the fight via 2nd round KO.
