Mezger stopped Tito Ortiz via 1st-round submission and is crowned the new UFC lightweight champion.
On April 26, 1998 Guy Mezger fought Masakatsu Funaki in a lightweight title fight for Funaki's Pancrase Openweight Championship title. Mezger was 30 years old and with a record of 20-5-2 (10), and Funaki was 29 years old and with a record of 35-7 (32). Mezger won the fight via 1-round unanimous decision and is crowned the new Pancrase lightweight champion.
