He died on May 25, 2014 at the age of 59 years. Muhammad was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1998. His professional boxing career spanned more than 18 years — from 1974 to 1992.
Muhammad made his professional boxing debut against Billy Early at the age of 19 on January 14, 1974, defeating Early via 2nd round TKO. He went on to win 6 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 4 wins via stoppage.
He had his first world title fight at the age of 24 on April 22, 1979 after 27 professional fights, against Marvin Johnson for the light-heavyweight WBC title. He defeated Johnson via 8th round TKO to become the light-heavyweight champion of the world.
