Johnny Tapia (Baby-faced Assassin) was an American professional boxer. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S. on February 13, 1967. He was a three-weight-class world champion. He died on May 27, 2012 at the age of 45 years. Tapia was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2017. His professional boxing career spanned more than 23 years — from 1988 to 2011.
Tapia made his professional boxing debut against Efren Chavez at the age of 21 on March 28, 1988. The fight ended in a draw. He went on to win 29 consecutive fights after this draw, which included 18 wins via stoppage.
He had his first world title fight at the age of 27 on October 12, 1994 after 27 professional fights, against Henry Martínez for the super-flyweight WBO (vacant) title. He defeated Martínez via 11th round TKO to become the super-flyweight champion of the world.
