On March 13, 2025 René Santiago fought Shokichi Iwata in a light-flyweight world-title fight for Iwata's WBO title. Santiago was 32 years old and with a record of 14-4 (9), and Iwata was 29 years old and with a record of 14-1 (11). Santiago won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and is crowned the new light-flyweight world champion.
