On his 21st career fight at 21 years old, Taylor became a super-lightweight world champion on September 3, 1988 after defeating Buddy McGirt via 12th-round TKO to win the IBF title.

He then went on to become world champion at the welterweight weight class as well, winning the WBA title against Aaron Davis via 12-round unanimous decision on January 19, 1991.
