Kuniaki Shibata (47-6-3, 25) was born in Hitachi, Japan on March 29, 1947. At the age of 17 years on March 6, 1965, he made his professional boxing debut against Seiichi Iizuka, winning the fight via 1st-round KO.
On his 36th career fight at 23 years old, Shibata became a featherweight world champion on December 11, 1970 after defeating Vicente Saldivar via 12th-round retirement to win the WBC and The Ring titles.
He then went on to become world champion at the super-featherweight weight class as well, winning the WBA, The Ring and WBC titles against Ben Villaflor via 15-round unanimous decision on March 12, 1973.
Shibata's last fight was a 10-round points decision win against Al Espinosa at age 30 on November 29, 1977. He retired with a 3-fight winning streak.
