Kuniaki Shibata (47-6-3, 25) was born in Hitachi, Japan on March 29, 1947. At the age of 17 years on March 6, 1965, he made his professional boxing debut against Seiichi Iizuka, winning the fight via 1st-round KO.

On his 36th career fight at 23 years old, Shibata became a featherweight world champion on December 11, 1970 after defeating Vicente Saldivar via 12th-round retirement to win the WBC and The Ring titles.
