On December 11, 1970 Kuniaki Shibata fought Vicente Saldivar in a featherweight world-title fight for Saldivar's WBC and The Ring titles. Shibata was 23 years old and with a record of 32-2-2 (21), and Saldivar was 27 years old and with a record of 36-1 (26). Shibata stopped Vicente Saldivar via 12th-round retirement and is crowned the new featherweight world champion.
On June 3, 1971 Kuniaki Shibata met Raul Cruz in a featherweight (WBC and The Ring) world-title defense fight. Shibata was 24 years old and with a record of 34-2-2 (22). Shibata stopped Raul Cruz via 1st-round KO and successfully defended his titles.
