Koichi Wajima (31-6-1, 25) was born in Shibetsu, Hokkaidō, Japan on April 21, 1943. At the age of 25 years on June 15, 1968, he made his professional boxing debut against Akira Takekawa, winning the fight via 1st-round KO.

On his 25th career fight at 28 years old, Wajima became a welterweight world champion on October 31, 1971 after defeating Carmelo Bossi via 15-round split decision to win the WBA title.

He then went on to become world champion at the super-welterweight weight class as well, winning the WBA, WBC and The Ring titles against Oscar Albarado via 15-round unanimous decision on January 21, 1975.
