Joel Casamayor (38-6-1, 22) was born in Guantánamo, Cuba on July 12, 1971. At the age of 25 years on September 20, 1996, he made his professional boxing debut against David Chamendis, winning the fight via 1st-round KO.

On his 21st career fight at 28 years old, Casamayor became a super-featherweight world champion on May 21, 2000 after defeating Baek Jong-kwon via 5th-round TKO to win the WBA title.
