Emile Griffith (85-24-2, 22) was born in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on February 3, 1938. At the age of 20 years on June 2, 1958, he made his professional boxing debut against Joe Parham, winning the fight via 4-round points decision.
On his 37th career fight at 24 years old, Griffith became a welterweight world champion on December 8, 1962 after defeating Jorge Fernandez via 9th-round TKO to win the WBC title.
He then went on to become world champion at the middleweight weight class as well, winning the WBA, WBC and The Ring titles against Luis Manuel RodrĂguez via 15-round split decision on June 8, 1963.
Griffith's last fight was a 10-round points decision loss to Alan Minter at age 39 on July 30, 1977. He was on a 3-fight losing streak by his last fight.
