Gomi was 27 years old and with a record of 24-2 (12), and Sakurai was 30 years old and with a record of 27-6-2 (15). Gomi stopped Hayato Sakurai via 1st-round KO and is crowned the new Pride lightweight champion.
On November 5, 2006 Takanori Gomi met Marcus Aurélio in a lightweight (Pride Championship) title defense fight. Gomi was 28 years old and with a record of 26-3 (13), and Aurélio was 33 years old and with a record of 14-3 (10). Gomi won the fight via 2-round split decision and successfully defended his title.
