      Virgil Akins (Honeybear) was an American professional boxer. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. on March 10, 1928. He was a welterweight world champion. Akins died on January 22, 2011 at the age of 82 years. His professional boxing career spanned more than 14 years — from 1948 to 1962.

      Akins made his professional boxing debut against Albert Adams at the age of 20 on March 10, 1948, defeating Adams via 6 round PTS.

      He had his first world title fight at the age of 29 on October 29, 1957 after 63 professional fights, against Tony DeMarco for the welterweight NYSAC (vacant) title. He defeated DeMarco via 14th round KO to become the welterweight champion of the world.
