      George Benton (The Mayor of North Philadelphia) was an American professional boxer. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. on May 15, 1933. Benton died on September 19, 2011 at the age of 78 years. His professional boxing career spanned more than 20 years — from 1949 to 1970.

      Benton made his professional boxing debut against Chico Wade at the age of 16 on July 18, 1949, defeating Wade via 1st round KO. He went on to win 6 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 2 wins via stoppage.

      Benton had a total of 13 losses in his professional boxing career.

      His last professional fight was a non-title rematch against Juarez de Lima at 36 years of age, on April 3, 1970. Benton lost the fight via 10 round unanimous decision.
