On August 24, 2019 Wilfredo Méndez fought Vic Saludar in a strawweight world-title fight for Saludar's WBO title. Méndez was 22 years old and with a record of 14-1 (5), and Saludar was 28 years old and with a record of 19-3 (10). Méndez won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and is crowned the new strawweight world champion.
On May 24, 2019 Wilfredo Méndez faced off against Janiel Rivera in a strawweight bout at age 22. He was coming in with a record of 13-1 (5), and Rivera was 27 years old and with a record of 18-3-3 (11). Méndez won the fight via 10-round split decision.
