On May 20, 2018 Ryoichi Taguchi met Hekkie Budler in a light-flyweight (WBA (Unified), IBF, The Ring) world-title defense fight. Taguchi was 31 years old and with a record of 27-3-2 (12), and Budler was 30 years old and with a record of 31-3 (10). Taguchi lost the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and lost the titles.
