Leonard Doroftei (22-1-1, 8) was born in Ploieşti, Romania on April 10, 1970. At the age of 28 years on April 24, 1998, he made his professional boxing debut against Jerry Villareal, winning the fight via 4-round unanimous decision.
On his 20th career fight at 31 years old, Doroftei became a lightweight world champion on January 5, 2002 after defeating Raul Horacio Balbi via 12-round split decision to win the WBA title.
Doroftei's last fight was a super-lightweight world-title fight against Arturo Gatti for Gatti's WBC title on July 24, 2004. He lost the fight via 2nd-round KO. He retired from the sport of boxing following this loss.
