José Cuevas (35-15, 31) was born in Santo Tomás de los Plátanos, Mexico on December 27, 1957. At the age of 13 years on November 14, 1971, he made his professional boxing debut against Alfredo Castro, losing the fight via 2nd-round KO.
On his 22nd career fight at 18 years old, Cuevas became a welterweight world champion on July 17, 1976 after defeating Ángel Espada via 2nd-round TKO to win the WBA title.
Cuevas' last fight was a 2nd-round KO loss to Lupe Aquino at age 31 on September 25, 1989. He retired from the sport of boxing following this loss.
