Ortiz was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1991. His professional boxing career spanned more than 17 years — from 1955 to 1972.
Ortiz made his professional boxing debut against Harry Bell at the age of 18 on February 14, 1955, defeating Bell via 1st round KO. He went on to win 19 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 8 wins via stoppage.
He had his first world title fight at the age of 22 on June 12, 1959 after 32 professional fights, against Kenny Lane for the super-lightweight NBA (vacant) and NYSAC titles. He defeated Lane via 2nd round TKO to become the super-lightweight champion of the world.
