On February 22, 2025 Zhang Zhilei fought Agit Kabayel for the vacant WBC Interim and WBC interim heavyweight titles. Zhilei was 41 years old with a record of 27-2-1, and Kabayel was 32 with a record of 25-0. Zhilei was coming off a win and Kabayel was on an undefeated 25-fight winning streak. Kabayel stopped Zhilei via KO in the 6th round. Failed to win the vacant title.

On March 8, 2024 Zhang Zhilei defended his WBO interim heavyweight title against Joseph Parker. Zhilei was 40 years old with a record of 26-1-1, and Parker was 32 with a record of 34-3. Zhilei was on a 2-fight winning streak and Parker was on a 4-fight winning streak. Zhilei lost via majority decision. Lost the title. Went the distance with Parker.
