Barry McGuigan was born in Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland on February 28, 1961. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on May 10, 1981 against Selvin Bell. McGuigan defeated Bell via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

McGuigan became a world champion fight at the age of 24 after 27 professional fights. He challenged Eusebio Pedroza for the WBA and The Ring featherweight titles and defeated the champion via 15-round unanimous decision, winning his first world titles.
