Genaro Hernández was born in Los Angeles, California, U.S. on May 10, 1966. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on September 27, 1984 against Dino Ramirez. Hernández defeated Ramirez via 4 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Hernández became a world champion at the age of 25 after 23 professional fights. He challenged Daniel Londas for the vacant WBA super-featherweight title and stopped Londas in the 9th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the WBC super-featherweight world title as well.
Hernández' last fight was an 8th-round RTD loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. at age 32, on October 3, 1998, in which he lost his WBC super-featherweight title.
