Laguna was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2001. His professional boxing career spanned more than 11 years — from 1960 to 1971.
Laguna made his professional boxing debut against Antonio Morgan at the age of 17 on August 21, 1960, defeating Morgan via 2nd round KO. He went on to win 26 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 18 wins via stoppage.
He had his first world title fight at the age of 21 on April 10, 1965 after 40 professional fights, against Carlos Ortiz for the lightweight WBA, WBC, and The Ring titles. He defeated Ortiz via 15 round majority decision to become the lightweight champion of the world.
