On December 16, 2023 Sunny Edwards, the IBF champion, met Jesse Rodríguez, the WBO champion, in a flyweight world-title unification fight. Edwards was 27 years old and with a record of 20-1 (4), and Rodríguez was 23 years old and with a record of 18-0 (11). Edwards lost the fight via 9th-round retirement and lost his title.
