On October 20, 2018 Ryōta Murata met Rob Brant in a middleweight (WBA (Regular)) world-title defense fight. Murata was 32 years old and with a record of 14-2 (11), and Brant was 28 years old and with a record of 23-1 (16). Murata lost the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and lost the title.
