Melindo won the fight via 12-round split decision and successfully defended his title.
On May 21, 2017 Milan Melindo fought Akira Yaegashi in a light-flyweight world-title fight for Yaegashi's IBF title. Melindo was 29 years old and with a record of 36-2 (13), and Yaegashi was 34 years old and with a record of 25-5 (13). Melindo stopped Akira Yaegashi via 1st-round TKO and is crowned the new light-flyweight world champion.
