Taniguchi was 27 years old and with a record of 15-3 (10), and Méndez was 25 years old and with a record of 16-1 (6). Taniguchi stopped Wilfredo Méndez via 11th-round TKO and is crowned the new strawweight world champion.
On April 22, 2022 Masataka Taniguchi met Kai Ishizawa in a strawweight (WBO) world-title defense fight. Taniguchi was 28 years old and with a record of 16-3 (11), and Ishizawa was 25 years old and with a record of 10-1 (9). Taniguchi stopped Kai Ishizawa via 11th-round TKO and successfully defended his title.
