On August 22, 2009 Juan Díaz faced off against Paulie Malignaggi in a super-lightweight bout at age 25. He was coming in with a record of 35-2 (17), and Malignaggi was 28 years old and with a record of 26-2 (5). Díaz won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision.
On April 8, 2006 Juan Díaz met José Cotto in a lightweight (WBA) world-title defense fight. Díaz was 22 years old and with a record of 29-0 (14), and Cotto was 28 years old and with a record of 27-0 (19). Díaz won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and successfully defended his title.
On April 28, 2007 Juan Díaz, the WBA (Super) champion, met Acelino Freitas, the WBO champion, in a lightweight world-title unification fight. Díaz was 23 years old and with a record of 32-0 (16), and Freitas was 31 years old and with a record of 38-1 (32). Díaz stopped Acelino Freitas via 8th-round retirement and is crowned the unified WBA (Super) and WBO champion.
On September 6, 2008 Juan Díaz faced off against Michael Katsidis in a lightweight bout at age 24. He was coming in with a record of 34-1 (17), and Katsidis was 28 years old and with a record of 23-1 (20). Díaz won the fight via 12-round split decision.
