Ramirez was 29 years old and with a record of 101-6 (82), and Whitaker was 24 years old and with a record of 15-0 (9). Ramirez won the fight via 12-round split decision and successfully defended his title.
On November 3, 1984 Jose Luis Ramirez fought Edwin Rosario in a lightweight world-title fight for Rosario's WBC title. Ramirez was 25 years old and with a record of 88-5 (74), and Rosario was 21 years old and with a record of 24-0 (21). Ramirez stopped Edwin Rosario via 4th-round TKO and is crowned the new lightweight world champion.
