Maxim was 30 years old and with a record of 78-18-4 (21), and Robinson was 31 years old and with a record of 131-2-2 (87). Maxim stopped Sugar Ray Robinson via 14th-round retirement and successfully defended his title.
On June 7, 1954 Joey Maxim faced off against Floyd Patterson at age 32. He was coming in with a record of 80-21-4 (21), and Patterson was 19 years old and with a record of 13-0 (8). Maxim won the fight via 8-round unanimous decision.
