On July 13, 2013 Ilunga Makabu faced off against Dmytro Kucher in a cruiserweight bout at age 25. He was coming in with a record of 14-1 (13), and Kucher was 28 years old and with a record of 21-0 (15). Makabu won the fight via 12-round majority decision.
On January 31, 2020 Ilunga Makabu fought Michał Cieślak in a cruiserweight world-title fight for the WBC title. Makabu was 32 years old and with a record of 27-2 (24), and Cieślak was 30 years old and with a record of 19-0 (13). Makabu won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and is crowned the new cruiserweight world champion.
On August 24, 2019 Ilunga Makabu faced off against Alexei Papin in a cruiserweight bout at age 31. He was coming in with a record of 26-2 (24), and Papin was 31 years old and with a record of 11-0 (10). Makabu won the fight via 12-round majority decision.
On June 16, 2019 Ilunga Makabu faced off against Dmitry Kudryashov in a cruiserweight bout at age 31. He was coming in with a record of 25-2 (24), and Kudryashov was 33 years old and with a record of 23-2 (23). Makabu stopped Dmitry Kudryashov via TKO.
On January 29, 2022 Ilunga Makabu met Thabiso Mchunu in a cruiserweight (WBC) world-title defense fight. Makabu was 34 years old and with a record of 29-2 (25), and Mchunu was 33 years old and with a record of 23-5 (13). Makabu won the fight via 12-round split decision and successfully defended his title.
On June 28, 2014 Ilunga Makabu faced off against Glen Johnson in a cruiserweight bout at age 26. He was coming in with a record of 17-1 (16), and Johnson was 45 years old and with a record of 54-18-2 (37). Makabu stopped Glen Johnson via TKO.
