On May 2, 1998 Hacine Cherifi fought Keith Holmes in a middleweight world-title fight for Holmes' WBC title. Cherifi was 30 years old and with a record of 25-3-1 (17), and Holmes was 29 years old and with a record of 31-1 (21). Cherifi won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and is crowned the new middleweight world champion.
On April 5, 1996 Hacine Cherifi faced off against Erland Betare in a middleweight bout at age 28. He was coming in with a record of 18-2-1 (14). Cherifi stopped Erland Betare via TKO.
