On March 1, 2002 Éric Lucas met Vinny Pazienza in a super-middleweight (WBC) world-title defense fight. Lucas was 30 years old and with a record of 35-4-3 (13), and Pazienza was 39 years old and with a record of 49-9 (30). Lucas won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision and successfully defended his title.
On November 30, 2001 Éric Lucas fought Dingaan Thobela in a super-middleweight world-title fight for Thobela's WBC title. Lucas was 30 years old and with a record of 34-4-3 (13), and Thobela was 35 years old and with a record of 20-8-1 (13). Lucas stopped Dingaan Thobela via 8th-round TKO and is crowned the new super-middleweight world champion.
