On April 18, 1989 Doug DeWitt fought Robbie Sims in a middleweight world-title fight for Sims' WBO title. DeWitt was 27 years old and with a record of 31-6-4 (18), and Sims was 29 years old and with a record of 29-5-2 (21). DeWitt won the fight via 12-round split decision and is crowned the new middleweight world champion.
On November 6, 1987 Doug DeWitt faced off against Tony Thornton in a middleweight bout at age 26. He was coming in with a record of 29-5-3 (17), and Thornton was 27 years old and with a record of 17-0-1 (16). DeWitt won the fight via 13-round majority decision.
