On September 30, 1961 Benny Paret fought Emile Griffith in a welterweight world-title fight for Griffith's The Ring title. Paret was 24 years old and with a record of 35-10-3 (11), and Griffith was 23 years old and with a record of 25-2 (8). Paret won the fight via 15-round split decision and is crowned the new welterweight world champion.
