Puello won the fight via 12-round split decision and successfully defended his title.
On June 15, 2024 Alberto Puello fought Gary Antuanne Russell in a super-lightweight world-title fight for Russell's WBC title. Puello was 29 years old and with a record of 23-0 (10), and Russell was 28 years old and with a record of 17-0 (17). Puello won the fight via 12-round split decision and is crowned the new super-lightweight world champion.
