      Carmen Basilio (The Upstate Onion Farmer) was an American professional boxer. He was born in Canastota, New York on April 2, 1927. He was a two-weight-class world champion. He died on November 7, 2012 at the age of 85 years. Basilio was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1990. His professional boxing career spanned more than 12 years — from 1948 to 1961.

      Basilio made his professional boxing debut against Jimmy Evans at the age of 21 on November 24, 1948, defeating Evans via 3rd round KO. He went on to win 3 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 2 wins via stoppage.

      He had his first world title fight at the age of 26 on September 18, 1953 after 50 professional fights, against Kid Gavilan for the NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring titles. He lost to Gavilan via 15 round split decision.
