Vassiliy Jirov was born in Balkhash, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union on April 4, 1974. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on January 18, 1997 against Vincent Brown. Jirov defeated Brown via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Jirov became a world champion at the age of 25 after 20 professional fights. He challenged Arthur Williams for the IBF cruiserweight title and stopped the champion in the 7th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
Jirov's last fight was a 2nd-round TKO victory over Jonathan Williams at age 35, on October 17, 2009.
