He was a heavyweight world champion. He died on February 2, 2005 at the age of 99 years. Schmeling was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1992. His professional boxing career spanned more than 24 years — from 1924 to 1948.
Schmeling made his professional boxing debut against Hans Czapp at the age of 18 on August 2, 1924, defeating Czapp via 6th round KO. He went on to win 3 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 2 wins via stoppage.
