      José Torres (Chegüi) was a Puerto Rican professional boxer. He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on May 3, 1936. He was a light-heavyweight world champion. He died on January 19, 2009 at the age of 72 years. Torres was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1997. His professional boxing career spanned more than 11 years — from 1958 to 1969.

      Torres made his professional boxing debut against Gene Hamilton at the age of 22 on May 24, 1958, defeating Hamilton via 1st round KO. He went on to win 12 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 10 wins via stoppage.

      He had his first world title fight at the age of 28 on March 30, 1965 after 36 professional fights, against Willie Pastrano for the light-heavyweight WBA, WBC, and The Ring titles. He defeated Pastrano via 9th round TKO to become the light-heavyweight champion of the world.
