Joey Maxim was an American professional boxer. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S. on March 28, 1922. He was a light-heavyweight world champion. He died on June 2, 2001 at the age of 79 years. Maxim was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1994. His professional boxing career spanned more than 17 years — from 1941 to 1958.
Maxim made his professional boxing debut against Bobby Berry at the age of 18 on January 13, 1941, defeating Berry via 4 round PTS.
He had his first world title fight at the age of 27 on May 23, 1949 after 83 professional fights, against Gus Lesnevich for the light-heavyweight NBA title. He defeated Lesnevich via 15 round unanimous decision to become the light-heavyweight champion of the world.
